What's the deal?
I may be a little dense, but what is the deal with Drupal from Acquia, Commerce Guys, and drupal.org? My ISP has two different Drupal packages I can install, and I've tried them both as well as the "base" package from drupal.org - are these different "distributions" kinda like linux?
Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me . . .
This is a great question. I hope to get some video coverage on distributions soon.
You're right, the different distributions are a lot like Linux. The idea is that by using a right distribution for the right kind of site, you can save yourself a ton of time piecing things together yourself. Distributions typically include modules and configuration as well in the form of Features modules.
The Acquia distribution is meant to be a good general-purpose starter. It has some of the most popular modules included with the distribution so you don't have to download and install them yourself.
The Commerce Kickstart distribution is intended to set up all of the configuration needed for Commerce to run properly, so in some ways it's essential if you're going to be Drupal Commerce.
If you're not sure where to start, then it might be a good idea to stick with the default installation from Drupal.org and practice putting the pieces together until you start to see the advantage of using a particular profile. Distributions can be powerful, but if you don't actually need one, they can get in the way by adding modules and configuration you don't need.
I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers!
